DROGHEDA’S JOBLESS – September 2012

LAST MONTH’S (SEPTEMBER 2012) unemployment (Live Register) statistics for Drogheda reveal that 7,900 people were “signing on” for Jobseeker’ Benefit and Jobseekers Allowance locally.

The figures can be broken down as follows… Males Under-25: 872, Males Over-25: 4,231, Females Under-25: 518, Females Over-25: 2,279. This brings the number of males “signing on” in September 2012 in Drogheda to 5,103 and the number of females to 2,797, leaving the town’s total Live Register numbers at 7,900.

These statistics do not include people on Fas employment courses or unemployed people on education and training courses. Neither do the figures account for unemployed people who have exhausted their jobseekers benefit and who do not qualify for the means-tested jobseekers allowance payment. The statistics do not account for unemployed people who have “signed off” and emigrated.

It is, therefore, estimated that the real unemployment figure for the Drogheda area (in September 2012) may be as high as 12,000.
