LETTER – No Intention of Paying Property Tax

Dear Sir,

The government’s determination to introduce a property tax next year is a signal that despite austerity continuing to crush the economy, something even the IMF is begining to recognise, they intend nonetheless  to make ordinary people pay for the banking and property crises.

The introduction of the Household Tax has galvanised the largesst campaign of civil disobedience this country has seen since the Land League. The Drogheda Campaign Against Household and Water Taxes has been to the forefront of this campaign.

It is our experience that of those who paid the household tax, many did so under duress but they have no intention of paying a property tax. Many more have told us that they simply won’t be able to afford the property tax, which is expected to be a minimum of Euro 400.00 per year.

The people of Drogheda know that it is immoral to continue to pay the bondholders of defunct banks while cutting back on essential services and supports that most people depend on.
