ARE WE SEEING THE BEGINING OF THE END FOR THE DI. I HAD HOPED THAT THE NEW EDITOR MIGHT SUCCEED IN GIVING THE PAPER BACK TO THE PEOPLE OF DRAWDA,HOWEVER IT WOULD APPEAR THE BEAN BARONS MINIONS IN THEIR MAD DASH FOR NEW READERS HAVE CAST US REGULAR READERS AND COMMENTATORS AND THE STAFF IN THE BIN.SO AFTER 100 PLUS YEARS,TWO WORLD WARS IT LOOKS LIKE GOODBYE

After the departure of Paul Murphy as Group Editor at the Drogheda Independent Co. Ltd the paper’s editorial content and editorial standards undoubtedly took a nose dive.
Senior executives, however, then milked the publicity surrounding the European Newspaper award won by the paper, for a photo page layout and design. What the public don’t know is that the paper’s management had nothing to do with the accolade. It was a picture page routinely designed and produced by two “ordinary” workers who weren’t even given a mug of tea by the parasite company management who nevertheless, “dined out” on the award and on the backs of the two ordinary workers, for a couple of years.
With the appointment of Marie Kierans as editor, we were definitely seeing the begining of the end of the rubbish content but every time Marie went on holidays it was back to square one again. It looks like Marie is now moving on so I wouldn’t hold my breath about the paper’s editorial content ever again amounting to very much.
You’ll never see the quality press, like the Irish Times or the Sunday Tribune, turning themselves into “The Beano” (tabloid format) just to appeal to the lowest common denominator – another case of knowing the price of everything and the value of nothing.
Two Fianna Fail Drogheda Borough Councillors even swear that the political content is written by the local, creeping-jesus, Blues(hirt) Brothers, and an “eejit” who speaks with a “contrived” accent because he thinks he is (or is going to be) the next Tommy Broughan. T.D.
No wonder Marie jacked it all in!

Marie, one of our own, will be sadly missed. The LETTERS TO THE EDITOR has been hi-jacked by the politicos, like or loathe my humble efforts at comment,Jim Brady and others used the page to voice opinions and spared no one, despite my former FF membership, the independent voice has been silenced. The page has been turned into a free advertisment for party hack bull-s#####s.

Our local wan-ta-be should keep his eye on the Dail seat because he will not get his arse on it

I am calling on you as Sec. of the DCTU to use your influence with ICTU to call a National Day of Protest, full work stoppage in order to bring home to this
re-incarnation of the Court of Louis XVI the people of 1916 did not die in order that we should swop one crowd of foreign dictators for a home grown bunch

  6. frankgallagher Says:

    Gerry a chara,
You’re pushing an open door asking me to do what I can to “persuade” Congress to organise a national general work stoppage in protest against the anti-worker policies of government.
Let’s not forget also Gearoid that the government, in pursuing this agenda, is dancing to the tune of the country’s business and commerce interests, who are dictating that “costs and public/social spending” is slashed.
The very same outfit, however, have no problem about pocketing public subsidies from the state or driving the price of residential property and building land right back up through the roof.
So if calling for work stoppages draws the predictable response from government (and indeed the “official opposition”) of being “irresponsible” and/or “damaging the economy”, those making that claim should look first of all look at their own kind – the creeping jesus auctioneering “profession”, the banks and lending institutions, solicitors, accountants etc. etc.- all of whom pillaged and plundered working peoples hard earned wages (and the country’s prosperity) during the boom years.

What if any is the DCTU position with regard to ICTUs mr Sweeney’s comment about inherited wealth,i.e that in the event of my daughter inheriting the family home she should pay tax at 40% of it’s value

ATTENDED THE ODS JBOR LECTURES, SUMMER SCHOOL WOULD DENOTE IMPUT. TOM REILLY HAD INVITE WITHDRAWN ON MORN OF LECTURE, CENSORSHIP ? glad I never joined

    • Liam Reilly Says:

The facts on the “Tom Reilly Affair” show that far from censorship , An open invitation was issued to Tom to address the JBOR school , in the DI on July 29th and his pesponse was that he could not bear to be in the same room as Dr Micheál Ó Siochrú , and would not be attending .
Tom changed his mind on Saturday September 13th and contacted Sean Corcoran . He did however lay down a number of conditions , he would not listen to Ó Siochrú or any of the other speakers as he was not interested in anything they had to say and after speaking he would not answer any questions and would leave .
When some of the invited speakers had difficulty with Tom’s Siochrú onditions , especially after Tom’s comments on them in his ” Life of Reilly ” which were reprted in a number of national papers , Sean was forced to withdraw the invitation but Dr Ó Siochrú made it clear that he would debate the matter with Tom on a different day .
Tom’s conditions was like a player agreeing to play in a match but only to take the penalty kicks and take no other part . or a player playing only if someone else was not playing .
Tom’s late change of mind in agreeing to speak left Sean Corcoran little chance to discuss the matter ith the committee of the ODS or the invited speakers and the withdrawal of the invitation appeared to make Tom the victim , when he in fact was the person not prepared to listen to other peoples views .
Brendan Matthews appears to have unearthed evidence that a number of well off local families were involved in the slave trade , but Tom is not prepared to listen . So come off it this was not censorship .
By the way “ATTENDED THE ODS JBOR LECTURES” should read ” ATTENDED SOME OF THE JBOR Lectures”
Unfortunately I was not there myself as we were returning on one of Slatterys Travel last trips before they joined the many Irish firms going to the wall .

Following the success of the recent Novice and Junior All Ireland Road Bowls finals on the Baltray Road . it might be a good time for Drogheda Borough Council to offer a site for the European Championships.
We have a lovely flat , straight course in the centre of town , almost deserted at weekends , with good viewing facilities for up to 10,000 visitors .
Yes West Street would be ideal
